First Impressions: Trash Talk’s “Awake”

In the interest of full-disclosure, I need to say that I really dislike Trash Talk. Seriously, I sincerely do not like the band for long-standing personal and professional reasons. In addition, I don’t buy into their so-called “DIY” gimmick, their relentless touring over the years does not impress me, and most importantly, I think their music is just plain mediocre and overrated. And that’s why it’s so difficult for me to genuinely say that I… like… this record? No, that’s not what I meant; I genuinely don’t mind this record. Which is a vast improvement over my reaction of dismissive wanking motions to previous releases.

First Impressions: Bison B.C.’s “Dark Ages”

Released in early 2010, Bison B.C.’s Dark Ages offers up 7 tracks of pummeling, massive cacophonies of modern doom metal. While the album has plenty of slow, trudging, stoned-out amplifier worship; Dark Ages still manages moments of technical riffing, punchy bursts of driving speed, and dissonant, bitter melodies. Think Mastodon, but without those awkward post-Leviathan albums. Although its hardly a release for those with a short attention span - with not one song clocking in under 5 minutes - tracks like Fear Cave and Two-Day Booze are guaranteed bangovers.
